Professionalism, Ethics and Liability in Engineering

Maria Lehman, P.E.

Abstract:

Engineering is a licensed profession that has requirements for the individual.  Since requirements are not worldwide, or even consistent throughout the United States, it is important to understand the building blocks of what it means to be a professional.  The foundation of the profession is Ethics.  Liability is the application of individuals typically outside of the profession on the professional.  The presentation will break down the elements of Professionalism, Ethics and Liability.

 Speaker’s Bio:

Maria Lehman, P.E. is the Project Manager for New York State on the Peace Bridge, the second largest by volume, border crossing in the United States, linking Buffalo, New York to Fort Erie, Ontario.  She has over 32 years of diverse, increasingly responsible, multi-disciplinary technical and leadership experience, both in the private and public sectors, including being the Project Risk Manager for the New Tappan Zee bridge, former Director of Quality Assurance for the URS Corporation and former Erie County Commissioner of Public Works.  She received her BS in Civil Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in several states.
